design research product design

Our approach to graphic and exhibit design remains firmly planted in the roots of our founder Alex Bally---to foster creativity and innovation through the use of intensive observation and planning in order to produce vivid, engaging and memorable learning experiences for our clients and their visitors.

We know each exhibit project has its challenges—it has to connect with visitors of all different cultures, genders, backgrounds and interests and learning styles. There are competitive pressures as well—how to compete for the public’s attention and imagination? How can the organization build attendance? Bally Design has the capabilities to provide a wide range of competent, timely, and cost-effective design services. We’ll then design the experience that communicates complex ideas in innovative and accessible ways…ways that inspire, attract, enlighten and engage.

As a 30 year+ design research pioneer, Bally Design understands the importance of observational research and the need to look beyond designing the “thing” to designing a meaningful experience. We take a phased approach beginning with stakeholder research and the development of an exhibit program. What is the organization’s vision, goals, objectives and perspectives for the exhibit? What topics should it cover? What is the right mix of high scholarship and entertainment? What interactive components are most useful and appropriate? Bally Design works with clients to develop the project plan and exhibit program.

Once the exhibit program is in place, narrative development can begin. A compelling story transforms exhibits into experiences that connect with people. Whether it’s the history of engineering, or the ecological benefit of the spotted newt or the complexities of a telecommunication system, the story must communicate interrelated ideas clearly and coherently. Bally Design can assist in story development through our extended network of resources.

With the story in development, Bally Design and the client will team up for a brainstorming session in order to create a series of concepts that turn the written word into the visitor experience. We’ll refine and expand upon those concepts and go through a series of review iterations. When the final concept is chosen Bally Design will begin the exhibit design, developing the specific details that lead to proper fabrication and installation.

Throughout the process Bally Design keeps the client at the center of the project and involves them in all key developments and decisions. We work together every step of the way so that are no surprises and no question that the exhibit will be an effective and engaging experience.
